Description:

Artist's statement:
This picture was painted in Glasgow after a severe snowstorm. A complete white-out in fact. The Park in the title refers both to Kelvingrove Park and the Park district – the sandstone Grecian terraces that rise above Kelvingrove, and where I live in Glasgow. The effect of the snowstorm was to give the natural dis-order of the park and the neo-classical order of Park an unaccustomed formal unity. It seemed to me that those two extremes - two languages if you like - had been pulled together providing the opportunity for a modernist treatment and another language. Hence the cubistic space, the multiple viewpoints, the grided composition and various allusions. Of course, all paintings are approximations, influenced by the cultural environment in which the painter finds him/herself. The Park Under Snow is no exception.
