Description:

Artist's Statement:
Lizzie’s practice centres around slow abstraction of photographic imagery. Images are distilled into shape and form, through an instinctive process focussed on colour and texture, transforming, and interrogating the image whilst retaining something of its essence.

Her work is initially informed by images of social history, often with an inherent connection to place and parallels with global issues today. She is particularly interested in moments of civil unrest but is also drawn to historic moments of innovation and disaster in polar and space exploration.

An essential element of the work is small drawn studies, informed by one or more of the source images. Restricted palettes are an important tool, determined by an unconscious repetitive process. The drawn studies go on to inform both large scale drawings and painted works, which take on their own significance or feeling: planes of colour and texture, instilling a sense of space, movement, and time.

Dark, subdued colours, some varnish in centre of composition. Expressive scratch-like marks as part of the composition.
