Description:

Once In a Blue Moon

This painting is an ode to the many nights I spent looking out of my childhood bedroom window, opening the curtains so that I could stare up at the stars and the moon, whilst surrounded by miles and miles of fields. The moon became a prominent, repetitive motif throughout a lot of my work. Growing up as an introverted, only child, on the remote island of Shetland, I spent a lot of my childhood days by myself. The moon became this constant figure in my life, at times the only thing bearing witness to me growing up. This looming, but comforting presence of the moon followed me as I got older, always there and watching, even during the most private and intimate moments of my life. ‘Once in a blue moon’, I would find myself stepping back from what I was doing to look back at the moon, both of us now staring at one another.
