In 1958, Frances Walker was appointed Lecturer in Drawing and Painting at Gray's School of Art, where she taught before taking early retirement in 1985 to devote more time to her studio practice. Fondly respected by students whom she taught over the years, she continues to take inspiration from wild places. Her work reflects upon journeys to the Western Isles of Scotland and Antarctica.

In 2014 the artist was awarded the prestigious Churchill Award along with Dame Judi Dench and John Rutter.

Artist and playwright John Byrne described painter Frances Walker as "modest, quiet and with a cool, burning talent quite unmatched anywhere in Britain."
