In the 1960s and 70s Barbara Balmer held a post as a design drawing tutor at Gray's School of Art. The artist, who was born in Birmingham, came to Aberdeen with her husband, George Mackie, who led the Design Department at Gray's School of Art from the 1950s until 1980. Whilst influenced and inspired by the work of Stanley Spencer and Giorgio Morandi, Barbara developed her own immediately recognisable style of well-balanced composition with subtle tone and colour. Her work is held in many public and private collections, including The Royal Collection and The Scottish National Portrait Gallery.
Barbara Balmer passed away on New Year's Eve 2017.

RGU Art and Heritage are grateful to Barbara's husband George Mackie DFC RDI for this donation.
