Aberdeen Harbour Sleet

Dimensions: overall: 54.7 cm x 68.5 cm

Description:

Blizzard from the North, Aberdeen harbour.
A view of Footdee on a wintery day.

Artist's Statement:

"In my 24 years teaching at Gray's School of Art I saw the harbour change from steam-engined trawlers, to diesel; and then the port ceased to be a major fish market. The oil boom transformed it. A wartime sense of drama came about. Very exciting visually. One could drive anywhere in the harbour precincts in those days. The nineteenth-century buildings still existed. I saw the best of it , leaving as I did in 1980."

George Mackie is a former Head of Design at Gray's School of Art. In 1973 he was awarded the title Royal Designer for Industry by the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufacturers and Commerce.

George Mackie was also a member of the Bomber Squadron during WWII.
