A coloured landscape featuring a fence, shrubs, barbed wire and chicken wire.

Following her work at the post office in Orkney, Sylvia studied Drawing and Painting as a mature student at Gray's School of Art, from 1955 to 1959. Returning to Gray's in 1969 after teaching in several schools, she took up the role of Drawing and Painting tutor until 1987. She became one of Scotland's leading contemporary landscape painters, and in 2005 was voted a full member of the Royal Scottish Academy.
Gentle, sublte colour and tone pervade her compositions, evocative of her beloved Orkney.

"When I was a first year student at Gray's, I had the privilage to have Sylvia as my tutor. She was agreat teacher and her artwork demonstrated a sensitivity that I admired. Her teaching, especially in life drawing, in which she emphasised sensitivity in the use of line and form, still influences my work today." - Joe Fan RSA
