Venetian. Fourteenth Century.

Additional frontispiece reads:
Ivory Triptych.
A devotional triptych, for use in a private oratory, carved in high relief. In the central compartment is represented the Coronation of the Virgin, with a background of angels playing upon musical instruments. The 'volets' or wings are ornamented with figures of saints, the warriors being intended to represent St Michael and St George; the two other saints are not recognizable by their emblems.
The distinctive character of this ivory has caused it to be assigned confidently to the Venetian school, and its date to the fourteenth century. It formed part of the interesting collection of Mr John Webb, exhibited at the South Kensington Museum in 1862, and was purchased from him by the authorities of that institution.
