Description:

Artist's statement -The title of my 4th year, final collection is ‘The Circus of Burtonesque’. I took four films of Tim Burton and to combine them with circus theme from one of the shows from ‘Le cirque du soleil’ called ‘Saltimbanco’. My aim was to create the collection that is a perfect example of good tailoring, creativity and imagination. Collection in which every single look is an ideal combination of prêt a porter and theatrical costumes. I focused my work on in the detail that gives some depth in the origin of a garment, but together with all pieces creates a very clear message. Each of the looks has got its own name and is inspired by a different elements.

This particular garment is called ‘The Heart Suit’. The main inspiration comes from Burton’s film of ‘Alice in Wonderland’ from 2010. I was truly inspired by the shapes and colours of Red Queens soldiers. Their structured bodies gave me the idea to create a very plain but well structured garment. Furthermore, I wanted to use their ‘logo’ of the heart to create another structured shape without being obvious. The second inspiration is taken from Tim Burton’s film ‘Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street’ from2007. I use stripes from the garments of the main characters as inspiration to create a tailored suit. I used the top-stitching to draw attention to each of the panels of the garment.

Finally I took the circus as an inspiration for the details of the garment. I used striped piping around each of the wings to create a colour block that is really important in the art of performance. Moreover I studied each of the costumes to be able to create a colour pattern that makes a statement.

‘The Heart Suit’ itself gives the opportunity for anyone to have a guess on the inspirations. Each of the details of this garment tells different story. However the true beauty begins when all of the stories come together to create pleasure for the eye.
