Artist's statement:
"These 3 cylinders are a small collection taken from the larger 'Tourist' group of cylinders - originally comprising 26 cylinders in total. Each has been created using the slip casting technique using only four different moulds and the casts were then altered and adjusted to create uniquely characterised, yet similar objects. Each cylinder was then painted or stained by hand.
My work primarily focuses on the creation of pieces that have character. I have created these pieces with inspiration from the city of Elgin, thus enabling me to explore and represent the present and historic nature of the town in ceramic form through use of a multitude of techniques and hoping to alert viewers from the town of a history and culture they may not have been aware of.
My exploration drew me to the conclusion that current consumerist trends have devoured the value of buildings that represent the “local” and are unique to the area. Yet, despite the similarities, each new homeowner endeavours to impact their personality upon the interior, most through the creation of the current ‘feature wall’ trend. Thus, giving a small stamp of individual character to the build and creating a history for the building in doing so."
