Enamelled Plaque.
This plaque is of the later school of Limoges enamels, painted in brilliant colours and heightened in gold. The subject represented is somewhat complicated, and the chief figure, that of a royal personage floating through the air, is entitled in a label above his head, Aeneas. It has not been found practicable to identify the picture with any passage in the Aeneid, or with any legend of Aeneas. This is the more remarkable as a companion plaque, also in the South Kensington Museum, is easily recognizable as representing the death of Anchises at Depranum.
The style of work warrants us in ascribing this plaque to the end of the sixteenth century. Its dimensions are 8 3/4 in. by 8 in. and it was purchased for the South Kensington Museum from Mr Farrer in 1855, at the price of £30. Register Number 1604-1855
