Artist statement:
This piece came into being as a result of my interest in perceptions of reality. Technological progress is the driving force of our culture and today we are fully submerged in the wonders available through our tireless pursuit of ground breaking scientific discoveries and inventions that alter the way we live. What do we hope to achieve from such a pursuit? Will the end product be a form of technological bliss?
Are we so emerged in science and technology that we cannot see the world for what it truly is?
To try and answer these questions I conducted an experiment in which I physically isolated myself from society and technology. To do this I would take a few days whenever possible and strand myself on an Island in the Firth of Forth, writing, drawing and filming my personal objective thoughts. The product was a unique perspective provided by the barrier of water between me and the rest of the world. With this perspective I created a work scavenged from the remnants of outdated technology around me, resulting in, among other things this pedal powered black and white television.
