Description:

Still Life( with fish fryer?)

Flat picture plane, upturned table, things from the side or the top, compositional balance of
invented and depicted shapes, scale and textures all contribute to this non illusory picture.
It’s about form with colour being of less importance. Interest in Cubism and Ben Nicholson
and the adoption of this way of thinking about painting and the depiction of reality gave some
limits for a student to find expression. I remember scrubbing acrylic paint on canvas under
the tap to discover and use the resulting textures. I have fond memories of this and other
similar student works. Thankfully with age and experience comes the realisation that there
are no absolute rules for painting and perception.Still life featuring a frying pan, fish slice, jug and mug. Flattened perspective.
