Following his retirement from the Head of School post at Gray's School of Art in 1971, Fleming founded Peacock Printmakers (now Peacock Visual Arts) and Artspace. He is considered one of Scotland's most important twentieth-century etchers. Fleming's inlfuence in the city of Aberdeen resulted in him being awarded an honorary LLD by Aberdeen University and later he was made honorary Doctor of Arts of the Robert Gordon University, of which Gray's School of Art is a component part.
