Description:

Illuisionistic figure composition. A lone female figure seated before a wall.

Jane Cruickshank began painting the human figure whilst studying at Gray's School of Art, were she completed a Master of Arts degree in 1999. She produced mainly self-portraits and portraits of family members. As seen in this painting, the figures were often placed off centre to create a feeling of vulnerability.

She has exhibited her paintings widely and has shown at Art Fairs in London and Glasgow. Using recognisable subject matter, she employs an intense realism in her paintings.

Cruickshank has won numerous awards and scholarships, including the Cooper and Lybrand Competition in 1996, the John Kinross Scholarship to Florence in 1997, and the James Torrence Memorial Award from the Royal Glasgow Institute in 1998.
