Memoria: Two Realities

Collection: Gray's School of Art Collection
Object Type: Print
Artist/Maker: Watson, Arthur
Date: 2013
Media/Materials: calico, plywood and perspex

Description:

Two chiaroscuro woodcuts printed on calico from routed plywood with screenprinted perspex and painted digtally routed plywood frames.

The work shown here is both a distillation and an expansion of 'Memoria' (2003), a much larger version of the image of the Corrie of Lochnagar translated from a photograph by the later Peter Hall, folk song collector and singer. This was the first in a series of large scale woodcuts showing mountains under snow coupled with attached glossaries, here of conditions of snow and ice in North-East Scots and the cant of travellers while other works deal with the poetry of climbers' route names. This coincidence of the visual and verbal consistently interests the artist - word and image but beyond the printed page.

'Watson has sourced much of his work in the folk traditions of the North-East. Furthermore, he has expanded this to an interest in non-material cultures: the oral tradition, the nature of language and ephemeral or transient phenomenon and imagery. The intellectual and creative ambition of this approach has been realised in the complex multi-dimensional projects he has undertaken.'
