Description:
Illustrated guide to Crathes Castle gardens by Charles Shearer including Latin classifications of the plants. Black, green blue and brown ink printed on cream card. This illustration of Crathes Gardens is the result of a brief set by lecturer Don Addison as part of graphic design course work. The students were asked to design an appropriate souvenir for the retail outlet at the National Trust for Scotland’s Crathes property. In researching the project, Charles Shearer and his class members spent time in the 16th century castle and walked the grounds. Responding early to their formal quality, Charles made an overall pencil study of the gardens and their plantings in preparation for his detailed pen and ink drawings and colour separations. His souvenirs were hand-printed on the A2 lithographic proofing press in the graphic design workshop at Gray’s School of Art. The work, which was popularly successful at Crathes, indicated early Charles Shearer’s qualities as an illustrator and printmaker, now nationally recognised. At the time, working with Arthur Watson at Peacock Printmakers, Don Addison was undertaking an NTS screenprinting commission for exhibition at Pitmedden Gardens, having previously exhibited at Drum Castle.
Designed and produced for the National Trust of Scotland.
