I Don't Wanna Play Doggy Anymore
Collection: Gray's School of Art Collection
Object Type: Painting
Artist/Maker: Williams, Nicola
Date: 2003
Media/Materials: household paint, marker pens on canvas
Dimensions: overall: 196.5 cm x 195 cm
Description:
Nicola Williams grew up on a farm in the northeast of Scotland, a time and place from whose harsh realities she conjured up her hallucinatory painted world populated by birds, beasts, children and people. She sources imagery from storybooks and tabloid newspapers. In her weightless and liquid pictorial space innocence drifts to shock and fear. The shining, bright and seductive aesthetic, made from household gloss paint and enamels, belies the darker tone of her pieces, just as her enthusiastic swathes and layers wrinkle and drip from the canvas.
