Joyce W. Cairns RSA RSW Hon RBA MA(RCA) was born and grew up in Edinburgh. She studied painting at Gray's School of Art, Aberdeen, from 1966-71, followed by studies in the Royal College of Art, London, between 1971-74. In 1976 the artist returned to Aberdeen, where she taught Drawing and Painting at Gray's until 2004. The artist retired from teaching to focus on a vast body of work, 'War Tourist', which was based on her father's war experience and followed in his footsteps through Europe and Tunisia. In 2006, 'War Tourist' was on display for three months at the Aberdeen Art Gallery. The exhibition attracted almost 30,000 visitors.

Throughout her career, Cairns has often incorporated images of herself in her paintings. The majority of her work has been autobiographical, based on past memories intertwined with present experiences.
