Artist's statement:

This work explores the space that those living with dementia surround themselves with in the context of their own homes. In this series particular focus is given to how these environments and the items within them can be considered an extension of their own identities.
As a contemporary art student I have been able to work in a number of mediums including sculpture and printmaking, however I have always been drawn to photography. Gray's is a small art school in the northeast of Scotland and has a sense of community that is typical of northern Scotland. I have seen the importance of community and identity throughout Aberdeen, an area that has changed dramatically with the development of the oil industry. As an art volunteer with Alzheimer’s Scotland I was able to see that identity as a whole is incredibly important to those living the dementia as they struggle to maintain and express their own idea of self whilst a new one is thrust upon them, a situation that is mirrored in the cultural identity of the city.

Going forward I intend to explore old and new, working with those with dementia and the wider community to create work that challenges our perception of identity.
