Old English Goblet.
The bowl of this elegant goblet is hollowed out of a light brown chalcedony, the mounting of silver gilt is a rare specimen of English goldsmith's work of Elizabethan date. Upon four dolphins is raised a circular base, on which four crabs are lying. On another disk are four snails in full relief, which in turn serve to support a vase standing on lions' paws and embossed with lions' heads and fruit. On the top of this vase rests the silver-rimmed bowl. The hall-mark, fortunately well-preserved, gives 1567 as the date.
The height is 7 7/8 in. and the diameter of the cup 3 5/8 in. It was bought in 1867 of Mr T. M. Whitehead for £350. Register Number 38-1867
