Description:

This small sculpture was created by carving polystyrene and then pouring aluminium into a cast. The artist designed his own set of custom made tools in order to carve into the polystyrene.


In a print back in time via a Gray's School of Art prospectus from 1963-64, we can see that Drawing and Painting staff in the school included R. Henderson Blyth, David Fowkes, Colin Thoms, Derek Ashby, Frances Walker and William Connon. The Design department staff included George Mackie, David Hodge, Hugh Barrett, Fred Stiven, Elspeth Younger and Angus Macleod. Whilst a lecturer in Drawing and Painting, Derek Ashby also experimented with sculpture and worked with steel and aluminium.
